A Guide to Keeping Your Skin Hydrated All Summer

Temperatures are starting to soar, and the warm weather brings with it the desire to wear comfortable clothing that exposes more skin. However, nobody wants to show off their skin when it’s dry, flaky, and ashy. Hydrate your skin this summer and let it glow with the help of some organic beauty products in these ways:

Don’t take hot showers

When you’re showering or bathing, try not to turn the temperature up to the usual boiling temperatures you would use during the winter. Hot or very warm water can dry your skin out and leave it parched. If you can’t resist taking a hot shower to soothe your muscles, try limiting the time you spend in the shower instead. Similarly, it might be an extremely relaxing experience to soak in a Jacuzzi, but it can worsen your dry skin.

Also, keep in mind that salt water and chlorine can also have an intense drying effect on the skin, so make sure that you rinse yourself off and moisturize as soon as you exit the ocean or pool.

Choose hydrating and gentle body cleansers

Traditional soaps are usually rather drying and can leave a sticky residue on your skin. Any cleansers that lather or foam are usually a lot more drying on the skin because of the surfactants that are used in their preparation. Go for gentler body cleansers that are formulated with hydrating ingredients such as herbal extracts, aloe vera, glycerin, and oils. Also, while body cleansers with artificial scents and perfumes might be pleasant to use in the moment, they can aggravate your dry skin.

Get an oil-based moisturizer

When you’re looking for a good moisturizer, go for something that contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and humectants. These high-performing ingredients work together to boost the moisture in your skin and keep it there. Humectants like glycerin draw water to the skin from the atmosphere, while ceramides are lipids that lock the moisture in by binding the cells on the surface of your skin together. Hyaluronic acid is able to hold up to a thousand times its own weight in water, making it the perfect storage system for hydration.

Similar to cleansers, perfumed moisturizers don’t provide optimal hydration. Avoid using fragranced body sprays with cooling effects as well since they usually include alcohol, which tends to dry the skin out.

Apply moisturizer right after you shower

Your pores open up after a shower or bath, making this the prime time for you to apply a high-quality moisturizer and seal in the layer of moisture present on the surface of your skin. Make sure that your skin is still damp, and massage in your product of choice until your skin glows.
